Members of the Palestine Doctors Association of Jerusalem pose for a group photo in 1980. The association was established in 1954 and remains one of the oldest professional Palestinian syndicates.1

The photo is part of the collection of Jerusalemite physician Amin al-Khatib (fourth from the left), who was a member of the association. In addition to operating his own clinic in the Old City from 1960 to 1994, al-Khatib cofounded numerous other organizations and charities, including Al Makassed Islamic Charitable Society and its clinics, Al-Quds University (see Pillar of Palestinian Education in Jerusalem, Al-Quds University Defies Israeli Pressure), and the Palestinian National Theatre, El-Hakawati (see Organizations on the Ground and Imad Muna: “When Cultural Activity Disappears, the Pulse of Daily Life Recedes and the Space for Expression Narrows”). His dedication to medicine and to his Jerusalemite community earned him the moniker “Doctor of the Poor.”2
