This archival photograph depicts vendors and shoppers in a Jerusalem souk located just inside Damascus Gate (Bab al-Amud) in 1900. Souks, also known as bazaars, are traditional open-air markets featuring street-side vendors and merchant stalls that sell various goods, including local produce, livestock, and handicrafts. Since Ottoman times, Jerusalem has had not just one centralized souk but rather a vibrant network of interconnected markets, streets, and trading hubs (khans) located in the heart of the Old City.
