An elderly man gazes at photographs of Palestinian prisoners held in Israeli jails during a protest in East Jerusalem on April 15, 2010, calling for their release ahead of Prisoners’ Day later that week on April 17. At the time, Israel was holding over 8,200 Palestinian prisoners, including 300 children.1 Recent statistics from July 2025 indicate that the number has risen to over 10,000 Palestinians, including 545 women and 1,360 children, with 3,600 held without trial or charge. Detentions have seen a sharp increase since Israel’s genocide in Gaza began on October 7, 2023.2
