Cadastral block

A defined section of land used in official property registration and land surveying (see Cadastral map). A cadastral block is usually divided into individual plots or parcels, each assigned identifying numbers for legal and administrative purposes. This type of mapping is used worldwide and dates to the Roman Empire. Cadastral blocks are especially significant in Jerusalem, where land ownership and property boundaries have been recorded under different governing authorities, and because the city contains densely populated neighborhoods, religious sites, and disputed areas (see Land). Government agencies, courts, planners, and surveyors use cadastral maps and block numbers to identify specific areas of land and manage official records related to development, ownership, taxation, and municipal administration.
