One of the ancient internal gates within the northeastern part of Jerusalem’s Old City, Bab Hutta leads directly to al-Haram al-Sharif. It is accessed through Bab Hutta Street, which runs eastward from the area near Via Dolorosa.
In Arabic, “Bab Hutta” means “Gate of Forgiveness,” referring to an Islamic narrative wherein God commanded the Jews to enter Jerusalem and ask forgiveness for any previous sins. While the date of the gate’s construction is unknown, its current structure dates back to the Ayyubid period (12th century AD) and was later restored in the Mamluk period (14th century AD).
There is also a neighborhood in the Old City by the same name.
