This illustration of Jerusalem at night was created by Palestinian Jerusalemite artist Taleb Dweik in 2009, when Jerusalem was designated the capital of Arab culture—a title that the Arab League Educational, Cultural and Scientific Organization (ALECSO) awarded. Rendered in an impressionistic, near-abstract style, the painting depicts a dense, glowing cityscape with domes and historic buildings layered across a hillside, and with al-Aqsa Mosque at its center.
