The Legal Status of Jerusalem: An Introduction to International Humanitarian Law in the Palestinian Context

This inclusive animated film explains the applications of the International Humanitarian Law (IHL) to the Palestinian context with focus on the occupied Palestinian territory. The film also explains key international law violations committed against the Palestinian people.

The Palestinian human rights organization Al-Haq presents an animated introduction to the applications of International Humanitarian Law (IHL) within the context of the occupied Palestinian Territory (oPT). Under international law, occupied East Jerusalem is part of the occupied West Bank, and so these laws apply there.

International humanitarian rights law is one of the oldest fields of conventional international law. Also referred to as the “laws of war” or the “laws of armed conflict,” IHL seeks to limit the effects of war and protect persons who are not actively involved. Thus it “regulates the conducts of the parties engaged in active conflict.”1

Al-Haq is an independent Palestinian nongovernmental human rights organization based in Ramallah, West Bank. Established in 1979 to protect and promote human rights and the rule of law in the oPT, al-Haq has special consultative status with the United Nations Economic and Social Council.

Al-Haq, recipient of many prestigious human rights awards, is the West Bank affiliate of the International Commission of Jurists – Geneva and is a member of the International Network for Economic, Social and Cultural Rights (ESCR-Net), the Euro-Mediterranean Human Rights Network (EMHRN), the World Organisation Against Torture (OMCT), the International Federation for Human Rights (FIDH), Habitat International Coalition (HIC), the Palestinian Human Rights Organisations Council (PRHOC), and the Palestinian NGO Network (PNGO).
